How do you get to know your characters?

Writers, how do you get to know your characters? Readers, can you tell how well an author knows their characters?

You really have to have a good immagation to be able to think up a book, I can't do that, I just don't see how you authors can get that much in your head at one time. I would have them all mixed up together.
